Introduction

Environment sustainability may be defined as the responsible utilization of environment to avoid depletion or degradation of natural resources.  It is crucial for an organization to implement and monitor environmentally sustainable work practices. This work demonstrates different effective strategies to reduce the environmental impact of IT workgroup. This report also incorporates a plan to implement different strategies for reducing environmental impact. Th

e plan includes different tools and techniques to measure success.

This report incorporates the case study of Rhyde collage in order to make the deep understanding of the environmentally sustainable work practice. According to the provided case study, the college intends to implement a plan for sustainable work practice.

Five strategies to reduce environmental impact of the it workgroup

It is crucial for an organization to minimize the negative impact of its organizational activities on the environment. It is the responsibility of an organization to develop the strategies in order to minimize its negative impact on the environment as well as to conserve it. There are different factors associated with IT which reflects adversely on the environment.  The main environment issue which can be arises due to business operations of an IT company are carbon emission, water usage, solid waste etc. 9Drolet, et al. 2015).

There are different strategies that can be adopted by an organization to reduce its environmental impact are:

1. Reduce, recycle and reuse ( Waste Minimization)
2. Energy efficient and eco-friendly electronic  machines or appliances
3. Rainwater harvesting
4. Eco-friendly transportation
5. Clean energy

Reduce, reuse and recycle

Reduce, recycle and reuse is one of the oldest, popular and effective strategy for the minimization of environmental impact of an organization. Reduce means minimizing the utilization of stuff which are responsible for the declining or degrading of the environment.  Reuse means using the waste things for another purpose or for the same purpose after implementing some modification. Recycling means turning wastes into other new and useful products. In the context of an IT company, this technique can be beneficial for minimizing carbon footprint (Jayasooria, 2016).

Energy efficient and eco-friendly machines or appliances

An organization adopts different machines or equipment in order to accomplish the different organizational task. The utilization of different machines gives rise to different environmental issues such as noise pollution. The sound coming out of the heavy machines is of high intensity and unbearable for the human ear. One of the other drawbacks of machines is their high consumption of energy.  In an IT company, the high energy consumption is the main problem that affects adversely to the environment, therefore, utilization of energy efficient machines can help in saving energy.

Rainwater harvesting

Rainwater harvesting is an important method to conserve the water for future. Every business organization needs a significant amount of water in order to operate its different business operations. The IT firms need water for the different domestic purpose such as drinking, cleaning etc. (Jayasooria, 2016).

Eco-friendly transportation

The utilization of eco-friendly vehicles is an effective strategy to minimize the carbon footprint. A company possess a huge volume of employees therefore if all employee uses eco-friendly ways for transportation than it reflects positively on the environment (Lippiatt, 2017).

Prohibition of harmful stuff

An organization uses different kinds of stuff which can be harmful to the environment. Use of disposal cups, plastic, inefficient and machines should be prohibited (Epstein and Buhovac, 2014)

Recommendation for two strategies to be implemented for the minimization environmental impact

The two most effective strategies from above-mentioned strategies are reducing, reuse and recycle and utilization of energy efficient electronic appliance. These strategies can be adopted by Rhyde collage in order to improve the sustainable performance (Targamadz?and Celiešien?, 2014).

REDUCE, REUSE AND RECYCLE

This method can play an important role in reducing the environmental impact of collages as well as for the improvement of sustainable performance. This method can play fundamental role in achieving different organizational goals of the college such as-

1. Reduction of carbon emission level by 50 % in 2020

2. Increase the recycle rate to 65 % by 2014

3. Reducing water usage by 15 %

Reducing, reuse and recycle method can be implemented to

Utilization of energy efficient and eco-friendly equipment

Utilization of energy efficient and eco-friendly equipment can lead to the minimization of environmental impact of an organization. In the context of an IT company, the main reason behind the wastage of energy is inefficient machines or electronic equipment.

The proper utilization of energy efficient and eco-friendly equipment can help Rhyde collage in achieving their following organizational goals –

Reducing carbon emission level by 50 % in 2020

In the case of Rhyde collage, the old computers and, printers and incandescent bulbs are consuming more energy and are generating more heat.  These equipment are responsible for influencing the environment to a great extent (Targamadz?and Celiešien?, 2014).

Figure 3: Energy consumption of different bulbs

Energy efficient tools such as LED bulbs can be adopted in place of 100 watt incandescent light bulbs.  LED bulbs are more energy efficient and eco-friendly than the incandescent bulbs (Pillai and Gupta, 2015).

Implementation plan

The key legislation associated with this strategy are:

1. Water reduction and recycling Act 2011

2. Waste prevention  programme for England

Rhyde collage should also develop few rules and regulation to ensure sustainable work practice. Rules and regulation can be implementationplan by the college which should be followed by employees (Targamadzeand Celiešien?, 2014).

A process of measuring the success of a strategy

Rhyde collage should measure the success of the plan in order to understand the effectiveness of the plan. It helps in understanding the different aspects associated with the plan.  It helps in keeping track of progress towards sustainability. Efficiency measure, outcome measure, quality measure and project measure can be adopted as the basis for measuring the success of the strategy.

1. Triple bottom line

2. Life cycle analysis

Triple bottom line

Triple bottom line is an accounting framework that includes three dimensions of performance:  social, environmental and financial. It is an important tool to support sustainability goals.  This model is also called three P’s that is people, planet and profit.

Life cycle analysis

Life cycle analysis is a technique to assess environmental impact associated with all the stages of the life of a product.  It helps in evaluating the main environmental impact associated with input and output.  This plan can also be evaluated these techniques (KhairunNisha, 2015).

Process for ensuring continuous improvement

Continuous improvement is essential to achieve the better outcomes of a plan. Continuous improvement process is an effort to improve the different activities as well as results of a plan.  It is beneficial in enhancing efficiency, effectiveness and flexibility of a plan. It is also helpful in reducing project cost and prevent. It is important to involve all the key stakeholders for ensuring the improvement in the plan. The four key steps for ensuring continuous improvement are Identify, plan, execute and review (Khairun Nisha, 2015).

Process for gathering and analysing ideas

Feedback methodology can be adopted for the collection of information or data. The secondary data by Feedbacks of the stakeholders can play important role in improving the effectiveness of the plan. There are different quantitative methods which can be adopted to analyse the data (Rastogi, et al. 2014).

Process for recognizing and rewarding sustainable practice

Motivation is very crucial to promote sustainable work practices. Rhyde collage can adopt different ways to encourage or motivate employees for sustainable work practices.

There are different financial as well as non-financial means of motivating the employees

1. Incentives

2. Bonus
