Literature review
According to Gapper (2017), the senior management to human resource team at the organisations are inclined towards integration of new business practices for ensuring that workplace environment fosters creativity and enhanced social behaviour among the employees.Organisations are shifting from tall sky scrapers to ground level extended workplaces for ensuring ease of collaboration among the employees from different business functions (Gapper, 2017). It is evident from the case of Apple wherein the workplace is designed in a form of a circular building along with a huge auditorium located at the centre. The workplace design of Apple supports more social involvement and high collaboration among the employees. In the similar aspects, Ferreira, Freitas and Freitas (2017),states that the design of workplace and surroundings plays an important role in influencing the decisions, productivity, and creative thinking abilities of an individual. The ambience of workplace, interiors, and technology are subjective aspects that can influence the cognitive behaviour of the individual (Ferreira, Freitas and Freitas, 2017). Provided the external business environment including workplace design, access to tools and new technologies and natural environment creates a positive impact on the individual it leads to increase in the productivity of the employees. On the other hand lack of proper external facilities such as extreme high or low temperatures, non-availability of sufficient lights, and absence of adequate resources creates an adverse impact on the employees, lowering their productivity and decline in their creative abilities (Ferreira, Freitas and Freitas, 2017).
In the views of Gapper (2017), high collaboration among the team is essential as it helps both employees and organisation to be more innovative and creative in execution of their work. Collaboration focuses on increased interaction and exchange of ideas with each other leading to increase in knowledge and development of thinking abilities. The increased collaboration however, does not yield positive results always as acceptance of change and working in groups is not appreciated by all the employees (Gapper, 2017). Supporting this Cheruvelilet al (2014), states that high collaboration among the employees helps in creation of teams that comprises of diverse members working together towards the attainment of a common goal (Cheruvelilet al., 2014). The performance of a team comprising of diverse members is enhanced as a result of varied interpersonal skills including social sensitivity, emotional intelligence, and effective communication skills possessed by the team members. High level of collaboration among the team members helps in easy attainment of the set goals and targets, improves understanding of the topic, reduces differences among the employees, and assists in improved management of the business activities (Cheruvelilet al., 2014).
As per opined by Gapper (2017), the organisations are relying on use of activity-based working for fostering culture of innovation in the organisations. Activity-based working is based on the concept of movement of staff across the functions based on their nature of work instead of being confined to a particular working area (Gapper, 2017). In this respect, the technology giants such as Apple and Amazon follow the practice of allocating lockers to the employees and choice to select workplace. Hoendervangeret al (2015) also presents views in this support stating that the increased in the level of competition among the business requires that the key resources of the organisations including the employees and the technology are used in an efficient manner. The organisations are making use activity based working wherein employees are not confined by assigning of a fixed workstation. The management team offers employees to select the workstation based on their activities for the day. The activity based working facilitates the employees in carrying out assigned tasks such as learning, experimenting, analysis, and socialising based on their specific requirements (Hoendervangeret al., 2015).
Some employees strongly support this new trend in business stating that it offers flexibility and helps in the improved understanding of the work. Activity-based working concept is not appreciated by some employees indicating low satisfaction as employees have high expectations, finds it difficult to concentrate, complaints of absence of privacy, and uncomfortable in working at different workstations (Hoendervangeret al., 2015). The organisations are required to put in efforts in designing of constructive policies that can help in enhancing the work satisfaction among the employees. Job satisfaction among the employees reduces costs and absenteeism, increase concentration and commitment towards the work and thereby helps in increasing the overall productivity of the organisation (Hoendervangeret al., 2015). The adoption of activity-based workplaces has offered opportunity for the employees to work remotely based on their convenience.
Gapper (2017), states that the advancement in the technology and practices of flexible working has led to growth of activity-based workplaces. Integration of flexible working concept has provided the employees’ freedom to work from any place and at any time. Further, this offers benefits in terms of increased revenue and reduction of expenses on sick leaves and health insurance coverage for the organisations (Gapper, 2017). In the views of Vivarelli (2014), the multinational organisations are offering facility of flexible working to the employees in the form of work from home facility, career break, and teleworking. Flexible working facilities help in creating a work life balance (Vivarelli, 2014). Especially the female employees working at senior positions in the UK are willing to work with organisations that offer flexible working facilities, as it helps them to prioritise among work and social tasks based on the situation (Vivarelli, 2014).
In the similar aspects, Subramaniam, Overton and Maniam (2015) the adoption of flexible working practices makes employees feel that they are cared and enable them to fulfil both their social as well as work responsibilities. The employees are able to focus on work, take care of elderly parents, and monitor their children creating a better social and personal life. Provided the employees have good social life their mental state is relaxed, it improves concentration and enhanced creativity leading to increase in productivity. The employees are also benefitted from flexible working in concern with getting relief from blockages confronted in traffic movement while travelling during peak hours (Subramaniam, Overton and Maniam, 2015).
Discussion
The analysis of the literature indicates that globalbusiness environment has changed across the globe. The organisations operating on large scale are planning at introducing of new trends to enhance the work satisfaction, productivity, and knowledge of the employees. The organisations are emphasising on making changes in the workplace design to facilitate more communication among the employees. Furthermore, human resource team is designing innovative practices such as employee engagement for increasing collaboration among the team members. The application of new trend of activity-based working by organisations aims at providing conducive working environment that supports the adaptability and growth of the employees. The concept of flexible working has enhanced the level of satisfaction and increased commitment of the employees towards work. In this respect, Gapper (2017) emphasis on the four new key aspects of global business environment that relates with the importance of workplace design, collaborations among the team members or employees, benefits of activity-based workplaces, and rewards of having flexible working environment (Gapper, 2017).
Conclusion
On the basis of above discussion it can be concluded that the business environment is changing very rapidly and it is essential for the organisations that they employ human resources in an effective manner to sustain in the market over long run. The integration of new business trends such as flexible working practices, horizontal workplace design, increasing collaboration among employees, and activity-based working are gaining popularity among the multinational organisations owing to benefits of cost reduction and enhanced employee satisfaction offered by them to the employees and the organisations.
