Annotated Bibliography

1. Citation information:-  Cocoman, A. and Murray, J., 2008. Intramuscular injections: a review of best practice for mental health nurses. Journal of psychiatric and mental health nursing, 15(5), pp.424-434.

Author’s view point:-  According to Cocoman and Murray, research on Intramuscular injection: a review of best practices for mental health nurses reveals guidelines for nurses in area of intramuscular injection in case of mental health care. Administration of injections is a daily activity of nurses in clinical practices but they need to take extra precautions in care of mentally ill patients as they are already sensitive. The main objective of this study was to evaluate nurses quality in delivering services related to IM injection practices and to create awareness regarding injection sites. An author finds different sites which are favorable for injection according to the problem as well the patient and complications of numerous potential for IM injections are highlighted, such as cellulites, abscesses, bone and peripheral nerves, muscle fibrosis, tissue necrosis, etc.

Usefulness and evaluative comment:-This research is useful as the author covered the issues such as inadequate nursing skills, injection technique, problems related to drugs and injection administration. Author also described the process to administrating injection. Limitation of this research is, in this area best practice guidelines are not developed which is also suggested by Australian nurses, due to which this study can be used further for other research.

2. Citation information:-Walsh, L., & Brophy, K. (2011). Staff nurses’ sites of choice for administering intramuscular injections to adult patients in the acute care setting. Journal of advanced nursing67(5), 1034-1040.

Author’s view point:-

According to Walsh and Brophy 2010, research on Staff nurses sites of choice for administering intramuscular injections to adult patients in the acute care setting depicts that, objective of research  was to determine present  acute care nurses used in intramuscular injection sites. With the help of questionnaire method which consist question related to professional assistance, 652 nurses were provided questionnaire, out of which 264 were retuned giving a response rate of 42.2%. Authors finds that nurses are using dorsogluteal site over the ventrogluteal site were not used preferentially along with forcefully not doing site selection according to the age factor and risk associated.

Usefulness and evaluative comment:-

From this research it can be concluded that, nurses are not properly trained and skilled as per the recent development, as they are not using ventrogluteal site in case of adults for intramuscular injections which is also recommended in recent nursing guidelines and literature. This research lacks in evidence regarding using ventrogluteal site inside of dorsogluteal site which is recommended in recent nursing literatures. This research must also include safety of properly mapping dorsogluteal site which can be needed in some special case along with the issues which provides knowledge of its avoidance.

3. Citation information:-Mishra, P. and Stringer, M.D., 2010. Sciatic nerve injury from intramuscular injection: a persistent and global problem. International journal of clinical practice, 64(11), pp.1573-1579.

Author’s view point:-

According to Mishra and Stringer 2010, research on Sciatic nerve injury from intramuscular injection: a persistent and global problem depicts that, objective of this research was to implement safe injection practices by both doctors and nurses to avoid risk of damaging the sciatic nerve and determine if sciatic nerve injury is caused and is it continuous problem of IM injection. It also focused of establishing guidelines and making them available on IM injection techniques. In this research survey method was used to collect the evidences, which were conducted at nursing organization which enquired usage of guidelines on IM injection between jolly 2005 to September 2008. Results obtained by this research concludes that, during 3 years of study period, sciatic nerve injection injury were only eight which were registered under ACC, which were all young adults, out of which only nursing organization consulted and published IM injection guidelines and technique. Sciatic nerve injury from the same were identified which were seventeen, out of which 80% were children.

Usefulness and evaluative comment:-

From this research it can be concluded that, sciatic nerve injury caused by an IM injection, affects patients both poorer and wealth healthcare system. Upper outer quadrant of the buttock is avoidable but is it persistent global problem. IM injection and its safer alteration sites exist which needs to be promoted by nursing organization and medical organization, so that this injury can be minimized.
